Roma have reportedly taken a major step towards signing Mason Greenwood after reaching an agreement on personal terms ahead of a potential summer transfer.
The 24-year-old is expected to leave Marseille during the current transfer window despite enjoying a productive spell in France over the last two seasons.
Greenwood has given the green light to a move to the Stadio Olimpico and is keen to join Gian Piero Gasperini’s side as they prepare for a return to the Champions League.
Roma have held extensive discussions with Greenwood’s representatives in recent weeks and have now established a framework for a long-term contract.
The proposed deal is expected to begin with a salary exceeding €4 million per season, with bonuses and future increases built into the agreement.
While personal terms are believed to be close to being finalised, Roma still face a significant challenge in negotiations with Marseille.
The Ligue 1 club are reportedly demanding €55 million for the former Manchester United attacker.
Roma are expected to begin formal discussions with an offer worth around €40m, although that figure is unlikely to satisfy Marseille.
The Italian club’s growing confidence stems largely from Greenwood’s willingness to make the move.
The forward has already started preparing for a departure from France after bringing his time in Marseille to a close.
Greenwood has been one of Marseille’s standout performers since arriving from Manchester United.
The forward scored 48 goals in 81 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the most productive attackers in France.
His form has inevitably attracted attention from clubs across Europe.
Turkish giants Fenerbahce had been heavily linked with a move for Greenwood earlier in the summer, while several other clubs have also monitored his situation.
However, Roma have now emerged as the fron-runners after making the most progress in discussions with the player.
The Friedkin ownership group are reportedly eager to strengthen the squad following qualification for the Champions League and view Greenwood as a marquee addition.
Gasperini is also believed to be keen on adding greater quality and creativity in the final third as Roma look to compete domestically and in Europe next season.
