Mason Mount still has a significant role to play at Manchester United, according to one reputable source.

There were enormous expectations surrounding what he would bring to the table when he made the switch from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023.

Yet, while Mount has impressed on occasion, he has simply not lived up to his potential.

He has never quite fulfilled the “he plays like Paul Scholes” hype that Roy Keane placed on him.

Injury struggles have severely held him back, and without ever enjoying a consistent run in the team, he has still found himself at the centre of the flop debate.

That said, there are those who feel he ought to be moved on. It is precisely that temptation, the prospect of INEOS cashing in and securing a reliable replacement, that has continued to fuel the exit rumours.

Premier League sides register interest

Reports doing the rounds have suggested that Premier League sides Aston Villa and Fulham would both love to sign the 66-appearance United ace this summer.

However, as the two clubs ready themselves for what could be a transfer battle over the United number seven, they have been advised that a bidding war is unlikely to materialise.

United’s stance on Mount

“Manchester United have no intention of selling midfielder Mason Mount in this summer’s transfer window. It is understood that the Red Devils are happy with him and are focusing on trying to get him back to full fitness.”

With United hopefully returning to competing on multiple fronts, following a season in which they missed out on European football altogether, they simply cannot afford to lose their quality players.

Soon back on the pitch

Mount is an intelligent player who, on a good day, has the ability to make things happen. Should he manage to shake off his injury troubles, much like Luke Shaw appeared to have done this season, he possesses everything needed to force his way into the United legend conversation.

Having returned to training last week after being sidelined since last January, when he made a cameo appearance in the 2-0 Manchester derby victory, the 27-year-old will be hoping to sustain his fitness through to the end of the season.

If he remains available for selection, he could yet prove to be caretaker head coach Mikel Carrick’s secret weapon in United’s pursuit of Champions League football, after years of absence from Europe’s premier club competition.
