UEFA have confirmed an all-Italian team of match officials to oversee proceedings between Real Madrid and Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola and his players travel to the Spanish capital off the back of a hugely encouraging performance on the road at Newcastle on Saturday night, to book their place in the last-eight of this season’s FA Cup.
A strike from Harvey Barnes will have set alarm bells ringing, before Savinho’s equaliser and an Omar Marmoush brace wrapped up a strong and resilient performance against Eddie Howe’s Magpies – the fifth meeting between the two clubs this season.
As City remain focussed on duties away from the intensity of the Premier League title race, next on the agenda is yet another meeting with Real Madrid, as the two clubs meet in the last-16 of the competition, and the second of three meetings this campaign.
It was a win on the road the last time Manchester City took on Los Blancos, having met in the league phase of the tournament at the Bernabeu in a game won thanks to goals from Nico O’Reilly and an Erling Haaland penalty.
And ahead of the latest meeting between Real Madrid and Manchester City, UEFA have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Bernabeu!
UEFA have confirmed that Italian referee Maurizio Mariani will head up a team of fellow countrymen at the Bernabeu this week in what will be his 22nd match across competitions this season.
Having officiated matches in Serie A, Champions League, Series B, Europa League, and Champions League qualifying, Mariani has issued a total of 82 yellow cards, two straight red cards, and awarding six penalties in the process.
Wednesday night will be the 44-year-old’s second ever match involving Manchester City, having last officiated Pep Guardiola’s side in last season’s Champions League and the 5-0 league phase victory against AC Sparta Prague at the Etihad Stadium.
That contest saw the Italian referee issue just one yellow card, and also award a penalty in City’s favour, converted by Matheus Nunes in the closing stages of the match.
Supporting Maurizio Mariani out on the pitch at the Bernabeu this week will be fellow Italian match officials Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni in the roles of assistant referees, UEFA have confirmed.
Watching the contest from afar in the VAR roles this week will be referee Marco Di Bello as the contest’s Video Assistant Referee, supported by Assistant Video Assistant Referee, Daniele Chiffi.
Managing the dugouts at the Bernabeu and ensuring all is kept in check between Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola will be referee Matteo Marchetti as the appointed fourth official.
