Manchester City return to the Etihad Stadium this weekend off the back of back-to-back away trips in the Premier League and Carabao Cup this week.

It has been a hugely testing run for Pep Guardiola’s City squad following the first international break of the new season, embarking on fixtures across three different competitions but not falling to defeat in any of the four outings.

Having gone into the pause for national team commitments with two defeats and a win to their name, many were slightly doubtful as to what a meeting with Manchester United would bring immediately after the break.

However, a convincing and dominant 3-0 win over Ruben Amorim’s men lifted spirits immensely, following up that win with a 2-0 victory at home to Napoli in their UEFA Champions League league phase opener.

Then came a resilient performance away to Arsenal, where an advantage thanks to Erling Haaland on the counter-attack was cancelled out by Gabriel Martinelli in the dying moments, but a strong point nonetheless from Pep Guardiola’s side.

And after progressing into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup via a 0-2 away win at Huddersfield Town, attentions return to English top-flight action and a reunion with Kyle Walker – now the starting right-back of Scott Parker’s Burnley.

Ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and the Clarets this weekend, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!

Match Referee

As confirmed by the Premier League this week, Robert Jones has been appointed into the role of lead on-field match referee for Manchester City against Burnley at the Etihad Stadium.

The 38-year-old match official will be taking charge of his eighth game of the brand new season, with his previous seven matches coming across five different competitions including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League qualifying, and the EFL Cup.

Across those matches, Jones has issued a total of 23 yellow cards to date, with no second yellow cards or straight red dismissals, as well as two penalties having been awarded.

Rob Jones has taken charge of Manchester City matches on 11 previous occassions in his top-level officiating career, with Pep Guardiola’s side emerging victors in nine of those contests, drawing one, and losing the other.

The last time City took on a match involving Jones as the referee came on matchweek 15 of the 2024/25 season and a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park; a game that saw Rico Lewis dismissed via a second yellow card.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Robert Jones on the field at the Etihad Stadium this weekend will be an assistant referee pairing of Neil Davies and Nick Greenhalgh, the Premier League have confirmed.

Video Assistant Referees

Overseeing proceedings at the Etihad Stadium between Manchester City and Burnley from the VAR Hub at Stockley Park will be the appointed Video Assistant Referee Paul Howard, and Assistant Video Assistant Referee Sian Massey-Ellis.

Fourth Official

Standing between the two dugouts and managing affairs involving Pep Guardiola and Scott Parker at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon will be appointed fourth official Anthony Taylor, the Premier League have decided.
