Mateu Alemany was a fan favourite at FC Barcelona during his tenure as the sporting director of the club. He was responsible for bringing in many players like Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski, who are key figures in the squad right now.
A couple of days ago, it emerged that the 62-year-old had taken up the same role at Atletico Madrid. Now, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes, the expert negotiator wants to sign Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen at the end of the season.
The Dane arrived at Barcelona during Alemany’s tenure from Chelsea on a free transfer. He established himself as a key figure in the title-winning campaign under Xavi Hernandez but has seen his importance diminish under Hansi Flick.
Although the German coach gives him a fair share of opportunities, Christensen isn’t a guaranteed starter for Flick. With his contract at the Catalan club expiring at the end of the season, the club might not hand him a new deal to extend his stay.
Mateu Alemany and Atletico Madrid are keen on signing him at the end of the campaign as a free agent. Christensen is still just 29 years old and in the prime years of his career. The only concern with him is his torrid injury history.
FC Barcelona fans love Christensen for everything he has given to the team. However, there seems to be some reason that is stopping Flick from making him a starter, even though he feels more suited to the system than Ronald Araujo.
It remains to be seen if Barcelona will give the Dane a more prominent role as the season goes along or if this will be his last season wearing Blaugrana colors. Moving to Atletico Madrid would strengthen a league rival, and let’s hope it doesn’t get to that.
