Atlético de Madrid face a pivotal summer in goal after Jan Oblak’s muscular injury revived debate over his continuity and accelerated succession planning.
El Chiringuito de Jugones reports that Giorgi Mamardashvili, the former Valencia goalkeeper who joined Liverpool in 2025, has had limited minutes behind Alisson Becker and could seek game time elsewhere. Within the club, Mateu Alemany is a leading advocate for the Georgian as a potential successor.
In Oblak’s absence, Diego Simeone has turned to Juan Musso, whose solid displays have kept the side competitive around high-stakes dates, including Tottenham Hotspur in Europe and the derby with Real Madrid.
Oblak, 33 and under contract until 2028, is at a crossroads after more than a decade as the club’s standard-bearer. Any exit would carry emotional weight for supporters and force immediate strategic calls.
Mamardashvili, 25, blends LaLiga know-how with imposing presence, and is open to a loan in 2026/27, a move that would suit Atlético’s finances. Interest from other European clubs remains, while Leo Román of Mallorca has also been linked as a younger, domestic alternative.
