The club said in a statement that Mateus Carvalho has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, with associated meniscus and collateral damage. The statement added he has begun treatment with the Department of Health and Performance (DESP), will have surgery soon, and wished their No 85 a full recovery.

The midfielder was injured during the warm-up before the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final against Corinthians at Neo Química Arena on Wednesday. He was helped back to the dressing room and left the pitch in tears.

No recovery timeframe was disclosed.

Without Carvalho, Vasco face Corinthians again at the Maracanã on Sunday in the second leg, with kick-off at 18:00 Brasília time.
