A broadcast camera captured the moment Vasco midfielder Mateus Carvalho suffered a serious knee injury during the warm-up before the Copa do Brasil final first leg at Neo Química Arena.

The club said in a statement that he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and also sustained meniscal and collateral damage. It added he will need surgery soon and gave no timetable for recovery.

In the footage, wearing a blue bib, he moved to close down when his left leg stuck in the turf and his knee gave way.

The midfielder, a substitute under Fernando Diniz, needed assistance to reach the dressing room and left the field in tears.

Vasco meet Corinthians on Sunday at the Maracanã in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil final, with kick-off at 18h Brasília time.
