Manchester United’s aggressive move for Mateus Fernandes has alerted several top clubs, seemingly forcing them to change their plans.
Earlier today, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming that Real Madrid expect United to sign Fernandes. As such, they are not going to make a formal move for the Portuguese gem, who is thought to be admired by Jose Mourinho.
Arsenal have also cooled their interest in Fernandes, and they are not the only Premier League rival prepared to look elsewhere.
According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool expressed “genuine interest” in signing Mateus Fernandes.
It is understood that the West Ham midfielder is viewed as a “serious prospect” and one who could “develop into a star at Anfield.”
However, Liverpool were reportedly hoping to pay significantly less than the £80 million figure now quoted at West Ham.
The report states: “It’s understood that Liverpool felt their valuation was realistic until the likes of United expressed a willingness to pay more, driving the asking price much higher.”
Accordingly, Liverpool are out of the race for the signature of “a fantastic midfielder and exactly the kind of player that the squad lacked last season – someone who can consistently win the ball back.”
In a separate report, Fabrizio Romano claimed that United have no intention of paying “completely crazy money” for the 21-year-old star.
However, they have opened talks with West Ham and his agent, Jorge Mendes, suggesting there is a belief at Old Trafford that a reasonable deal can be struck with the cash-strapped, relegated side.

The Italian journalist revealed that talks are ongoing to find an agreement by potentially restructuring the deal and including add-ons.
West Ham want a bidding war for the 5 ft 10 in midfield genius, but recent developments at Real Madrid and Liverpool should help United lower their asking price. Fernandes’ well-documented preference to join the Red Devils has also strengthened INEOS’ pursuit.
