Barry Douglas, a key figure in Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United promotion side, has retired from playing, prompting tributes from his 2019/20 teammates.
The player said in a post that it was time to leave the playing side, looked back with pride on almost 500 games and multiple titles in different countries, thanked every club that trusted him and highlighted the honour of representing Scotland.
Douglas joined from Wolves in summer 2018 for around £3 million, the first permanent signing of Bielsa’s reign. The left-back played 44 games across two Championship seasons under the Argentinian.
He never made a Premier League appearance for Leeds, spending 2020/21 on loan at Blackburn Rovers, then departing when his contract expired a year later. His 17-year career also took in Dundee United, Lech Poznan and Konyaspor.
In total he made 455 appearances for seven clubs in four countries. He won the Championship with Leeds and Wolves, the Ekstraklasa twice with Lech Poznan, plus cups in Poland and Türkiye.
Messages arrived from former teammates, including Mateusz Klich, Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling, praising his career and time together, offering congratulations and affection, and even saluting his Polish.
