Leeds United are pursuing attacking reinforcements in January, with Joshua Zirkzee among the names linked, and teammate Matheus Cunha has said the Manchester United forward’s situation is not good after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road.

Zirkzee came off the bench and set up Cunha’s goal.

Cunha told BBC Sport: “Josh is a pleasure to play with, he has a lot of quality. His situation is not good but he has the quality to change it. We are here to push him.”

Daniel Farke’s switch to 3-5-2 has exposed thin depth at centre-back and up front. Joel Piroe has been linked with a departure before the window shuts. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha have impressed since arriving on free transfers, but Leeds still need a striker who can start.

Before the window opened, Leeds and West Ham were said to have made approaches for United’s £36.5m signing Zirkzee, with Roma leading the way.

United were said to be seeking £43m. Roma have reportedly proposed a loan paying around a tenth up front, with a possible obligation of about £30m. Zirkzee will surely prefer Roma, certainly over Leeds.

West Ham look unlikely to return after signing Pablo and Castellanos. If Roma fail to agree terms, Leeds could revisit the move, although United’s bench was threadbare on Sunday. Ruben Amorim’s sacking may also see Zirkzee stay and try to impress the next coach, with Darren Fletcher in interim charge.
