Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels will feature in the BVB starting lineup in a pre-season friendly against Juventus this coming Sunday. The German footballing legend – after briefly considering returning to his longtime Bundesliga club for the Club World Cup – instead announced his retirement from football this summer. Dortmund managing director Carsten Cramer confirmed the news on Thursday.
“He’ll be playing from the start,” Cramer told Sport1. “Because he would like to run out with the team.”
Hummels’ former BVB teammates Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukas Piszczek were permitted to partake in a charity match last September. Jürgen Klopp returned to coach the team, which also featured Neven Subotic, Sebastian Kehl, Marcel Schmelzer, Roman Weidenfeller, and then head coach Nuri Sahin.
Hummels was present at the match, but did not play. The then AS Roma professional merely received a bouquet of flowers prior to kickoff. For the “real farewell”, Dortmund will be selling a special jersey in Hummels’ honor. The jersey is already available in the club fan shop.
The Juventus friendly will serve was Dortmund’s final tune-up fixture prior to the start of competitive play in the DFB Pokal on August 18th.
