Wolves technical director Matt Jackson says selling Joao Gomes to Aston Villa for £38m was the responsible decision for the club.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 25-year-old has moved across the West Midlands after three and a half years at Molineux, with Jackson backing him to have an outstanding career.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo for £15m in 2023 and was widely expected to depart following relegation, though Villa were not the obvious destination early in the summer.

That changed when Unai Emery sought midfield reinforcements after Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United and Amadou Onana sustained a serious knee injury, prompting Villa to act quickly.

Jackson praised Gomes as a model professional and family man, and said Wolves must make responsible choices for the wider good, then build to be stronger collectively.

He added that well-run clubs without unlimited resources have to operate this way, and he believes supporters have long understood the model.

Looking to the rest of the window, Jackson remains confident. Wolves moved fast for Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez earlier in the summer, but since Cesar Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards, only winger Rafiki Said has arrived.

After two weeks of training under Peixoto, Jackson said the staff are getting to know the squad and the bond is growing, and he said there will be changes before the deadline while he likes the team’s current shape.
