Matthijs de Ligt has been a rock at the back for Manchester United this season. The Dutchman has played every minute of every Premier League match for the Red Devils so far.
De Ligt has mostly operated in the central centre-back position, but has slotted in effortlessly at right centre-back to accommodate Harry Maguire in a back three when required.
The 26 year old has reportedly won the most defensive duels among centre-backs in the Premier League this season, signalling his impressive rise. De Ligt recently sat down for a candid conversation to discuss his recent form.
Speaking to the Red Devils’ website, De Ligt outlined the reasons behind his fine form this season. He said: “Well, the first thing that’s really important is I had a proper pre-season.”
“I feel, for me and my body, pre-season is always really important and I think it was one of the first pre-seasons in five or six years when I didn’t have a transfer, an injury or a Euros.
“The last time was probably my last season at Ajax and that was actually one of the best seasons of my career! I feel it is a big thing that is really important.
“I feel that, mentally and physically, I am in a really good place. I feel quite confident. Obviously, my team-mates and the manager help a lot because they give me this confidence.
“I think I am also used to the Premier League as well now, the pace, which helps also. Overall, these are the most important things that take me to this level at the moment.”
This season, De Ligt has registered 15 tackles, eight interceptions and five blocks in eight Premier League appearances. He has registered 360 passes with an 88% completion rate. The Dutchman’s disciplinary record has also been impressive, as he has conceded only five fouls and is yet to receive a yellow card or a red card.
De Ligt believes he is entering his prime and remains hopeful of continuing his impressive rise.
“I feel that I am coming to my prime age now. I think as a defender, normally around 29, 30, 31, you are at your best. I am now 26 and I think I have experienced a lot in my career and I can use this experience to my advantage. Hopefully I can keep continuing that,” said De Ligt.
De Ligt has now made 51 appearances for the Premier League giants since arriving from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024. Over the course of his career, the Dutchman has also played 117 times for Ajax, 117 times for Juventus and 73 times for the Bavarians.
With Maguire already on the wrong side of 30, De Ligt could well be the Englishman’s long-term successor at the Theatre of Dreams.
