Lazio winger Mattia Zaccagni sustained a right thigh muscular injury in the 1-0 defeat to Milan and is now expected to miss Italy’s World Cup play-off campaign, which begins on March 26.

Calciomercato reports he is likely to be sidelined for around a month, ruling him out of the upcoming international window.

Medical tests identified a medium-scale post-traumatic injury to the vastus medialis and vastus intermedius in his right thigh, and he has started rehabilitation.

The setback occurred during Sunday’s Serie A match, leaving the winger facing a spell out at club level.

He is expected to miss matches against Bologna, Parma, Fiorentina and Napoli during his recovery.

It is not a case of his season being over, but he is unlikely to return to the Lazio starting line-up until the final few matches of the campaign.
