Maurice Louis-Dreyfus, brother of chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, has thanked Sunderland supporters after Europa League qualification, adding a playful nod to Newcastle. The message came at the end of a landmark first season back in the Premier League.

Sunderland finished seventh, clinching a top-10 place and first European football since 1973-74, with Régis Le Bris’ side beating Newcastle home and away. He said in a post that he was grateful to everyone involved and to the fans.

His reflection ticked off staying up and a top-10 finish, praising the team’s efforts and a historic end to the campaign. The moments after the match were presented as being for the supporters, who were described as deserving them.

He also referenced beating the visitors twice, a line that appeared to nod to the derby double over Newcastle. The post followed emotional scenes across Wearside as players, staff, supporters and the ownership group celebrated.

Sunderland returned to the top flight via the Championship play-offs, with many expecting a fight to stay up. Instead they secured a place in next season’s Europa League, completing a rise from League One to Europe in four years.
