Kylian Mbappé edged closer to Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s calendar-year goal record on Wednesday night, netting twice in a 3-2 Copa del Rey win over third-tier side Talavera CF.

The French forward opened the scoring with a penalty before sealing the victory with a long-range strike the keeper couldn’t handle in the 88th minute, bringing his tally to 28 goals in 23 games this season.

Mbappé’s brace took him to 58 goals for 2025, equalling Ronaldo’s tally from 2012 and leaving him just one short of the 59-goal mark the Portugal star set in 2013.

With Madrid’s final game of the year against Sevilla on Saturday, all eyes will be on the Santiago Bernabéu as he looks to match, or even surpass, his boyhood idol.

Given Mbappé has already bagged doubles in eight games this season, the prospect of him making history seems very much within reach.
