Manchester City midfielder James McAtee captained England Under-21s as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Slovenia.
England moved to within a point of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Under-21 European Championship in Slovakia.
After winning their opening encounter against Czechia 3-1, victory would have seen Lee Carsley’s side through to the last-eight.
But England’s James Beadle was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening 45 minutes as Slovenia pushed for an opener.
McAtee had England’s best opportunity in the first half when he found space after good work from Jonathan Rowe, but pulled his effort just off target.
And he went even closer shortly after the break when he linked up with Tino Livramento but his close range attempt was superbly saved by Martin Turk and his follow-up squirmed inches wide.
England kept pushing for the victory with Harvey Elliott and Jack Hinshelwood going close but they were unable to find the breakthrough.
The young Three Lions are next in action on Wednesday when they play Germany with a 20:00 (UK) kick-off live on Channel 4 for UK viewers.
Another draw would see them through to the next stage while a victory would see the defending champions finish top of Group B.
