The winding football journey of Mehdi Zeffane has taken another difficult turn in Algeria, with his brief adventure at ES Mostaganem ending in an unexpected departure.

Zeffane's move to the newly promoted Algerian top-flight club last summer was surrounded by hope. Having been without a club for a full year since leaving France's Clermont Foot in 2023, the transfer promised a fresh start for the former international. But, as revealed by exclusive sources to Africafoot, that promise quickly turned to disappointment for both parties.

The experienced 33-year-old right-back, formerly of Olympique Lyonnais and Stade Rennais and capped 19 times for Algeria's "Fennecs," failed to make a positive impression. Training reports indicated he did not convince the technical staff, either physically or in terms of performance. His struggles to recapture his prior fitness and form saw him gradually slide down the pecking order, eventually falling completely out of the coach's plans.

Faced with a high-profile player contributing little, ES Mostaganem's management made the tough decision to sever ties amicably. According to sources, the contract termination was settled with a financial compensation estimated at €50,000 paid to the player.

This abrupt exit leaves Zeffane in a precarious position once again. Following unsuccessful trials in the Gulf and now a short, unproductive stint in Mostaganem, the defender finds himself a free agent for the second time in quick succession. Observers are left wondering if one final chance for a comeback still exists for the once-promising player, or if this chapter signals the beginning of the end for a career that started brightly in Europe but has reached a difficult crossroads back home.
