The night after France’s 3-1 win over Senegal, Lionel Messi lit up the World Cup with his first tournament hat-trick as Argentina beat Algeria 3-0. It took him to 16 goals, level with Miroslav Klose, on his 200th cap and at the start of his sixth finals.

L'Équipe highlights a night also illuminated by Erling Haaland, who scored twice as Norway beat Iraq 4-1.

The Manchester City striker kept expectations in check, suggesting France might win everything, insisting Norway would go game by game, and warning it will be difficult against them.

After the opening round, Norway top Group I on goal difference, +3 against France’s +2. The sides meet on 26 June at 21:00.

Austria were pushed by Jordan but won 3-1. Ali Olwan struck the bar on 23, then drew a save from Alexander Schlager on 34, before curling in his country’s first ever World Cup goal on 50 minutes.

Jordan face Algeria on Tuesday at 5:00. Messi could break the record against Austria on Monday at 19:00. Today’s fixtures include England v Croatia at 22:00, Ghana v Panama at 1:00, and Uzbekistan v Colombia at 4:00.
