Lionel Messi is celebrating reaching a new record after his role in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Peru.
Messi set up Lautaro Martinez’s winner for the world champions as Argentina extended their lead at the top of the table in South America’s 2026 World Cup qualification phase.
Argentina are now five points clear at the summit after second-placed Uruguay drew 1-1 with Brazil in Salvador.
The 37-year-old’s assist was his 58th in the colours of La Albiceleste, equalling the all-time record in men’s international football.
Messi moves level with former USA international Landon Donovan and now boasts a record of 170 goal involvements in 191 caps for the national team. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more international goals than the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
The Inter Miami forward has shown few signs of slowing down during an impressive 2024, with the win over Peru his final fixture of the calendar year, following Miami’s elimination from the MLS play-offs.
He has recorded 29 goals and 18 assists in 36 games for club and country and has lifted the 2024 Copa America and MLS Supporters’ Shield.
