L'Équipe highlights three standout sports documentaries this week on Disney+, HBO Max and Netflix, spanning Lionel Messi, the United States and Brazil’s 1994 glory.
Messi: the forgotten tape, an ESPN film on Disney+, shows how a VHS persuaded Argentina to cap him amid Spain’s interest. It races to 29 June 2004, when he played for the U21s against Paraguay.
At Jorge Messi’s request, Barça TV’s Jaume Marcet cut a highlights tape that reached Buenos Aires. After months of inertia, a match was arranged at speed. An AFA official even lifted a phone book in Rosario to find relatives, then reached Jorge in Barcelona.
US against the world on HBO Max follows the squad from 2022 to this home World Cup, blending MLS and Europe-based talent including Christian Pulisic and Matt Turner. Before 2026 they had nine wins and 20 defeats at World Cups, then began by beating Paraguay 4-1 in Los Angeles on 13 June.
Emotion runs through it, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino in tears after the 2025 Gold Cup final loss to Mexico, 1-2. Home scenes explore families, and back-up keeper Matt Turner underlines America’s diversity.
USA 94: la quatrième étoile du Brésil on Netflix relives Brazil’s fourth star after a 24-year wait. Dunga sets the tone, Baggio misses, and the 1994 final finishes 0-0 after extra time, 3-2 on penalties. Romario, 13 other champions and Carlos Alberto Parreira recall the journey, alongside the 1991 low point in Bolivia and the losses of Dener and Ayrton Senna.
