Mexico, one of the three host nations, struck the first goal of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday night, Julian Quiñones scoring in the opening match against South Africa.
The breakthrough followed a risky pass from Ronwen Williams towards Yaya Sithole, intercepted high by Erik Lira on the edge of the area.
Lira slipped in Quiñones, and the Al-Qadisiyya forward, 29, guided his shot through the legs of the South Africa goalkeeper.
The finish arrived after nine minutes and was his third goal for the national team.
The tournament runs until 19 July.
