Mexico will shut schools in the capital on Thursday 11 June to ease congestion as the World Cup opener is staged in Mexico City.

According to L'Équipe, president Claudia Sheinbaum ordered the one-day suspension of classes, with Mexico facing South Africa at Estadio Azteca at 13:00 local time.

On Tuesday, Sheinbaum also told federal employees to work from home that day, except essential services and staff involved in tournament operations.

She said the measures were designed to improve mobility, road safety and access for residents and visiting tourists.

Plans floated in recent months to bring forward the end of the school year by 40 days were dropped after a backlash from parents over additional childcare costs.
