The Red Devils started a bit sluggish, with Palace enjoying possession and looking more dangerous. The Eagles took the lead inside four minutes through defender Maxence Lacroix, who shook off Leny Yoro to head home from a corner-kick routine.

However, the momentum shifted in the second half when Matheus Cunha was brought down inside the area by Lacroix.

In addition to United being awarded a penalty, Lacroix was also sent off. Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from the spot as he sent Dean Henderson the wrong way.

The United skipper then turned provider, delivering a sumptuous assist for Benjamin Sesko to score the winner and secure all three points.

The result has seen the Red Devils jump to third place in the Premier League table with 51 points.

Shaw was named in the starting XI once again but was forced off in the first half after a collision with Daniel Muñoz. The England international was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui. Maguire was withdrawn in the closing stages of the game for Ayden Heaven. He was spotted having a word with the medical staff before he immediately went down the tunnel.

Speaking to the media after the final whistle, Carrick gave an update on the pair.

Carrick gives Maguire and Shaw updates

Carrick said about Shaw [as quoted by NBC Sports], “He just wasn’t well. He was ill. We’ll see how he recovers. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”

On Maguire, he remarked, “We’ll see with Harry. Hopefully he’ll be ready for Wednesday. I thought the boys who came on did really well for us and we needed it.”

Asked for his thoughts on the game, Carrick answered, “I’m really happy. It was a test for us today. Coming in at halftime a goal down was something slightly new for us. We didn’t start the game great, Palace did, and luckily we grew into it.”

“Good to win a game against a team that is tough to break down.”

On why his team started slow, he explained, “I’d rather talk about the hour after that. It’s football. They are a good team and it doesn’t take much for the game to swing both ways. We just weren’t sharp enough.”

“We’ll look at it and address it but there are a lot of good things we can take moving forward.”

He said about Lacroix’s red card, “He’s clean through on goal. It was a great pass from Bruno. It definitely asks the question of the officials. The fourth official said the review wasn’t the penalty but what color he was going to give.”

On Sesko scoring again, “Ben’s there to score goals and he’s done enough of that lately. He’s an important player and he’s going to be even more important as he progresses.”

“Amad coming on and rotating a little bit but for Ben to get that goal again, he’s got some important goals for us.”

United are next in action on Wednesday when they go away to Newcastle.
