According to Sky Sports, talks between Carrick's representatives and United have advanced and there could be an official announcement as early as Tuesday.

The report sates that while Carrick is keen for Woodgate, his former assistant at Middlesbrough, to join him at Old Trafford, it's not clear as to whether United are prepared to agree to hiring the former Leeds and Tottenham defender on a short-term contract.

It is understood that talks will continue over the make-up of the backroom staff as there could be coaching role for Darren Fletcher after he took charge of the first team against Burnley and Brighton following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney - Man United’s all-time leading scorer - has thrown his hat into the ring with regards to joining Carrick backroom staff.

“Of course I would,” he said on The Wayne Rooney Show when asked if he would take up a position on Carrick’s coaching staff if offered the role.

“I think it’s a no brainer if that’s the situation but I think what the club needs is people around the place.

“So whether that’s if Michael goes in for instance, Fletch or John O’Shea or myself or whoever it needs people around the club who know the football and Roy Keane, I think.

“Having people who know the club, who care for the club, who understand what it takes to be a Man Utd player I think that’s where the club needs to be.

“I was with him in Barbados last week. Obviously none of us had seen this coming, Michael is a very clever person and he’ll command respect from the dressing room.”
