Michael Carrick says his future at Manchester United will be “decided pretty soon” as reports claim he has been offered the head coaching job on a permanent basis.

The Athletic report that the club have proposed an “initial offer” of a two-year contract, with the option of an additional year, after making an impression during his four-month stint as interim boss.

The 45-year-old has won 10 of his 15 matches in charge, losing just twice, to guide the Red Devils back to UEFA Champions League football and has been nominated for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award. No Premier League club has won more points (33) since the Englishman’s appointment on 13th January.

Talks over the proposed deal are currently underway and could be resolved before United’s final home game of the season, against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on 17th May.

Michael Carrick says Man Utd future to be decided ‘pretty soon’

Speaking ahead of this Sunday’s match, Carrick had nothing major to add on his situation, but said a decision is right “around the corner”.

“[I] can’t blame you for asking,” the former Man Utd midfielder said. “[There are] two games to go, there’s not much else I can say.

“The situation is pretty clear for us all. Same as. It doesn’t change what we are doing this week.

“The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon, we knew that it was going to be towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season.

“Nothing has changed, there is no big swing on that. That is what it is. Whatever is beyond that is pretty close around the corner anyway.”

Perhaps tellingly, Carrick says he is happy with the work he and his coaching staff have put in so far.

“It’s a unique football club, a special football club. I’m immensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, to help.

“As a supporter and ex-player, as a pure supporter and caring about the club so much, to come back and help and move the club forward was important.

“To make a big step and get back in the Champions League is good. We’re happy with the work we’ve done so far.”

Carrick added that he intends to address the United fans after the Forest game regardless of whether or not his future has been sorted by then.

“I think that’s important regardless of the situation. The supporters are a massive part of this club. We thank them, and I certainly thank them, for the season and the support, the last four months for me personally,” he said.

“Regardless of that [his future], for what we’ve gone through and that connection, the players have felt that, it’s important we have that anyway.

“It’s important for me to thank the fans for that.”
