Liverpool have long tried to sign the biggest prospects from Brazil. They always run into the same problem, though.
Certain other clubs are far, far more comfortable paying enormous fees for relatively unproven talent. Liverpool never have been and that's led to them being beaten to signings for a long time now.
Rodrygo Goes was where they got closest. A deal with Santos looked all but done, only for Elano, then a coach at the club, to convince them they should wait one year as Rodrygo's value was sure to skyrocket.
They took a chance on him and were completely correct. Real Madrid paid a massive amount to sign him, blowing Liverpool out of the water.
