Midfielder backs Corinthians squad to clinch Copa do Brasil 🏆

Corinthians midfielder Maycon gave an interview to the program Fala Aí on UOL Esporte and was asked about his expectations for the 2025 Copa do Brasil semifinals against Cruzeiro. In his response, he highlighted his confidence in the Corinthians squad, as well as respect for the opponent.

The first match between the teams will take place on December 10 (Wednesday), at 21:30 (Brasília time), at Mineirão. The second match, in turn, will be four days later (Sunday) at Neo Química Arena, at 18:00: “We are aware of the comeback they had this year, they are having a brilliant year. But we know we have many conditions to go there and have a great duel. Of course, we are aware of the strength of the opposing club, but we also have our strengths, especially the Arena, which is something we have to explore to the fullest. We hope that when the time comes, we can focus exclusively on Cruzeiro,” he began.

He continued: “It's a game where we know the simple won't be enough, it will be a very complicated game, where we have the conditions to win, but it won't be easy”, he continued. A three-time Copa do Brasil champion (1995, 2002, and 2009), Corinthians seeks to win the tournament again after 16 years. Since then, the Alvinegro has reached two finals (2018 – Cruzeiro and 2022 – Flamengo) and two semifinals (2023 – São Paulo and 2024 – Flamengo).

The Corinthians number 7 responded about the dream of winning the Copa do Brasil but emphasized the need for the team to keep accumulating points in the Brazilian Championship to finish the tournament as high as possible with five games remaining. Currently, Corinthians is in 13th place with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 13 losses – 35 goals scored and 38 conceded). Maycon also understands that, at the same time, the short-term dream is the Copa do Brasil.

“It's a dream for us, something everyone at the club aspires to. We know that until we get there, there's a long process in the Brazilian Championship, we're not in a comfortable position. We have to work to get there and, even to be able to focus on the Copa do Brasil, finish this championship as calmly as possible, putting Corinthians in a comfortable position.”

“In the short term (dream) with the Copa do Brasil, because it's a tournament we're close to. When it comes to this final stretch, we only have four opponents, and we will face two directly. We know it's an important competition, not only for us but for the club as well. It's been a long time since Corinthians won a national competition, and I think it's a competition we deserve after all the difficult years we've been through,” he concluded.

On loan to Corinthians from Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine, only until the end of this year, Maycon's future at the club is uncertain, as there is a debt related to previous loans of the player with the Ukrainians at FIFA. In two stints with the Alvinegro's main team (2016-2018 and 2022-2025), the "Filho do Terrão" has accumulated 241 games (183 as a starter), with 115 wins, 66 draws, and 60 losses – almost 57% success rate.

Additionally, he has scored 18 goals, provided 16 assists, and won four titles: Campeonato Paulista (2017, 2018, and 2025) and Brasileirão (2017).
