Midfielder to debut for Corinthians in 2026 after wrist surgery

On Thursday night (22), Corinthians faced Santos at Vila Belmiro for the fourth round of the first phase of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista and ended up drawing 1-1. The goal for the Alvinegro was scored by striker Yuri Alberto at the beginning of the first half. The draw left the Corinthians team in seventh place with five points (one win, two draws, and one loss – five goals scored and five conceded).

The draw in the Alvinegro derby also marked the debut of midfielder Rodrigo Garro in the 2026 season. The number 8 missed the matches against Ponte Preta (H), Red Bull Bragantino (A), and São Paulo (H) as he was recovering from surgery on his left wrist. The Argentine was brought on by coach Dorival Júnior in the 18th minute of the second half and had a discreet performance.

Previously, the expectation was to use him only in the final of the Supercopa do Brasil, against Flamengo, on February 1st, at Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília. In 27 minutes played, Garro recorded the following stats: one blocked shot, nine actions with the ball, 1/1 accurate long passes (100%), and 3/6 accurate passes (50%). His rating on Sofascore was 6.2.

Signed by Corinthians in 2024 from Talleres, Argentina, the number 8 quickly became a key player for the team. In his first season, he was decisive in the team's surge in the Brasileirão (from the relegation zone to the Pré-Libertadores), and was also part of the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil titles, both in 2025, against Palmeiras and Vasco, respectively.

In total, he scored 15 goals and provided 23 assists in 102 games (84 as a starter), with 46 wins, 27 draws, and 29 losses – a 53.9% success rate. In 2024, he was the assist leader in the Brasileirão and was part of the ESPN Bola de Prata Team of the Year. In the last season, he scored only two goals and provided nine assists in 36 games. Between March and May, he was sidelined with a right knee injury, and in October, he suffered a calf muscle injury, which affected his run of games.

After the draw against Santos, Corinthians remains focused on the Campeonato Paulista. That’s because, next Sunday (25), at 8:30 pm (Brasília time), the Alvinegro team visits Velo Clube at the Benito A. Castellano Stadium for the fifth round of the first phase of the state championship.
