Mikel Merino to undergo foot surgery and could miss the World Cup | OneFootball

Mikel Merino will undergo surgery on a foot injury, putting the rest of his season at risk and casting doubt on his World Cup involvement.

Arsenal said in a statement that he will have the operation and faces an extended period out because of a bone issue in his right foot.

The midfielder was injured in last week’s defeat to Manchester United, then missed the midweek match against Kairat Almaty and Saturday’s win over Leeds United.

A mainstay for Luis de la Fuente’s Spain and part of the group that won the last Euros, his selection for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada will depend on fitness. The World Cup begins in June.

Arsenal aim to have him back in training before the season ends. His absence may push the club into the market, with the transfer window in England closing in less than 24 hours.
