FLW details the perfect July on the transfer front for the Baggies.
West Brom will be hopeful of making further transfer additions this month to help Ryan Mason deliver success at The Hawthorns.
The Baggies have currently made just a solitary signing so far during the transfer window, recruiting seasoned Championship defender Nat Phillips from Liverpool, but no further players have walked through the building in the Black Country yet, despite Bournemouth’s David Brooks being touted for a medical earlier this month on social media.
Albion’s controlling shareholder, Shilen Patel, said that the club are facing similar financial constraints as the previous season as they battle with profit & sustainability issues, meaning transfer activity is only likely to flow by sanctioning the exits of some key first-team figures.
Here at FLW, we detail West Brom’s perfect July on the transfer front, and what players they should look to be signing.
Stockport County’s Ethan Pye is a player on the rise in the EFL.
At just 22 years of age, Pye was sensational in the third tier last season at Edgeley Park, playing 42 times under Dave Challinor as the Hatters made the play-offs in their first term back in League One.
The beating heart of County’s central defence, Pye scooped Young Player, Players' Player and supporters Player of the Year, with speculative links surfacing on social media about the Baggies monitoring Pye’s situation.
The Baggies will still be unsure over the future of Torbjorn Heggem after the Norwegian’s stellar debut season in the second tier and could need to search for a replacement, while Pye possesses versatility by also playing left-back, which is a position needing to be addressed as Callum Styles would prefer to play in a midfield role, while Gianluca Frabotta failed to start a single league game last season.
While it may be a costly purchase, Pye is a player on the rise in the English game, with the Championship his calling card after being such a success in League One.
West Brom are set to add to their forward ranks with the addition of striker Aune Heggebo.
The 23-year-old has plied the early stages of his playing career in his homeland with Brann, scoring seven times from 13 Norwegian top-flight games this season.
As first reported by Nettavisen and then Fabrizio Romano, the Baggies are closing in on a move believed to be in the region of €5.5 million (£4.75 million).
The forward will now need to agree terms with Albion and complete a medical before having his switch to English football confirmed, although there are not believed to be any roadblocks in the way.
Heggebo is a forward who has slick movement, makes intelligent runs, is sharp in the six-yard area and is always willing to get shots away when he can, so he is set to be an exciting addition that will increase competition for places alongside Daryl Dike and Josh Maja.
Ryan Mason will be aiming to use his connections at Tottenham Hotspur to help boost his West Brom squad, with one of the names consistently mentioned being Mikey Moore.
Albion are in the search for attacking reinforcements after the exits of Grady Diangana and John Swift, with the left-wing a particular area to address.
Mikey Johnston had a very poor season in the blue and white stripes, while Karlan Grant’s future has been called into question given the former Huddersfield Town man enters the final year of his deal in the Black Country.
Football Insider has linked both Albion and Birmingham City with interest in Moore, while Football London revealed that Spurs head coach Thomas Frank is yet to decide what he plans to do with the 17-year-old next season.
It’s a waiting game for all involved, but Moore would be a superb addition at second tier level, having a breakthrough term in the top-flight last campaign and ready to earn regular first-team game time as he aims to reach the top of the English game.
The Baggies need to have a sharper attacking line to compete for promotion and Moore could help achieve that after having such a close working relationship with Mason at Spurs.
