Thiago Silva and Porto announced they’ll part ways after just five months, and Milan are expected to try to bring him back again. The Rossoneri were already linked to their former icon last summer and in January, but he chose a different country for his return to Europe.
According to ESPN (via Mediaset), the veteran decided not to pick up an option to extend his stay in Portugal and will weigh his options. He had hoped that another spell in the Old Continent would help his chances of making the Brazilian World Cup squad. He was on the provisional 55-man list, but he didn’t survive the last cut. The defender tallied 14 appearances in the second half of the season, contributing to winning the title.
Thiago Silva spent three years at Milan in the prime of his career, between 2009 and 2012, lifting one Scudetto. He worked for two campaigns under Massimiliano Allegri before heading to PSG and eventually Chelsea a few years later.
The center-back will have to decide between the Rossoneri and simply hanging up his cleats at age 42. In the second event, he could get a coaching job for the Blues. His family resides in London.
They’ll need at least one more steady defender to deal with the more crowded schedule next season, and he’d be a decent signing in a limited role. It’d make more sense to onboard him now than last January. It’ll depend on how strong his desire to keep playing is after missing out on the World Cup. Despite some signals in the opposite direction, it’s one further indication that Allegri is pretty firmly at the helm.
