Millwall are taking a look at ex-Ipswich Town star Massimo Luongo
Millwall are eyeing up a move for former Ipswich Town midfielder Massimo Luongo.
The Lions are preparing for their first full season under Alex Neil’s rule, after a promising end to the 2024/25 campaign.
Neil was defeated just nine times during his 26 games in charge of the club, finishing two points shy of the play-offs.
With the Scotsman turning to the transfer window in an attempt to bolster the Lions’ midfield, Luongo has reportedly caught his eye.
According to Dan Marsh of the Mirror via X, the 32-year-old has attracted the interest of Millwall, with the club taking a look at him during the early stages of pre-season.
After leaving Ipswich last month following the expiration of his contract, the midfielder has been training with the East London outfit.
The Australian international has a wealth of Championship experience, having operated out of the division for the Tractor Boys, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday across the last decade.
He featured 11 times for Ipswich in the Premier League last season and played a crucial role in the Suffolk side’s back-to-back promotions from League One to the top-flight.
Earlier this summer, Neil and Co. decided to let George Saville and George Honeyman both exit the club, which has left quite a hole in midfield.
The Lions don’t possess the riches that other sides in the division enjoy and therefore have to be strategic over how they invest their money.
Luongo would represent a sensible deal that wouldn’t require them to fork out a transfer fee but reinforce in an area that they desperately need to, which would allow the Lions to allocate more of their funds to another target later in the window.
Furthermore, the fact that Neil has been able to watch the 32-year-old close up during the early stages of pre-season will give the former Preston North End and Norwich manager a chance to get a real feeling as to how Luongo would fit into his system.
It also allows the player an extended opportunity to get used to his new surroundings before the season starts, which is likely to help get the best out of him on the pitch.
All in all, signing Luongo makes perfect sense for Millwall and is likely to be well-received by supporters.
