Millwall firmly remain in promotion contention but will have to bounce back from consecutive defeats in the Championship.

After going down at home to Hull City, the Lions followed it up by being beaten 2-0 by Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park last Saturday lunchtime, as goals from Andri Guðjohnsen and Yūki Ōhashi separated the two sides.

As well as tasting back-to-back defeats, Alex Neil’s men are now winless in their last three games, and it’s a slide that needs addressing quickly if Millwall are to remain inside the top six.

But their upcoming fixtures will be difficult to see their fortunes change, as the Lions host promotion contenders Ipswich Town and Bristol City after Christmas, before welcoming in the New Year with a trip to the South Coast to face Southampton.

It’ll be intriguing to see how Millwall will cope over the festive period, particularly as they are hamstrung by so many injuries to first-team players.

The likes of Will Smallbone, Massimo Luongo, Josh Coburn and Casper De Norre have really limited Neil to what he has at his disposal, while the influential Femi Azeez is currently serving a three-match suspension for his straight red card against Hull City.

With squad depth so thin for Millwall at the moment, the January transfer window is coming around at the right time to help them bolster options.

One player Millwall have been linked with is Manchester United full-back Harry Amass, who has impressed during the first half of this term on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

As per the Daily Mail, the Lions have been touted for a move along with Stoke City, and it could well be possible given Ruben Amorim’s damning comments about the 18-year-old.

Amorim’s belief that Amass isn’t at the level to compete at Man Utd has put his Red Devils career in serious doubt, and it seems the young defender will only be able to change his mind if he can have an impact at a club competing towards the top end of the division.

With this in mind, FLW’s Millwall fan pundit has commented on whether a move for Amass would be welcomed during the January transfer window.

Millwall warned against Man United, Harry Amass transfer swoop

Speaking to Football League World, Millwall fan pundit Lucas Ball has cast doubt over a Lions move for Harry Amass, believing Millwall are already well-stocked at left-back and that there are other areas of the squad that need addressing urgently.

Sheffield Wednesday would, of course, love to retain Amass for the season's full duration, with the young left-back much more valuable at Hillsborough than he perhaps would be with Alex Neil's side.

Lucas said: “To be honest, I haven’t seen much of Harry Amass this season, but I’ve heard he’s doing quite well at Wednesday. To go there in the summer with the difficulties they’re in shows he’s got a bit of character about him as well, which is good.

“At the same time, he’s predominantly a left-back. We’ve got three players in the squad already that are primarily left-backs in Alfie Doughty, Zak Sturge and Joe Bryan. Sturge last few games has been a bit out of form and Bryan has not had the best season.

“I’d be surprised if we used a loan slot on another left-back unless there are real particular plans to ship Bryan off in January. Doughty, we were told, was signed to play more as a left-winger, but that’s not really materialised, so I think he stays at left-back, so I’d be a little bit surprised if there’s too much serious interest in a loan move.

“If it was one we were looking to bring in permanently, it would be slightly different, but I think you’d be hard pushed to get him out of Man Utd this season on a permanent move.

“I don’t think it’s our biggest problem area either. We need bodies fairly early in January, but I don’t think it’s one of our biggest problems at the moment. There are certainly other positions that need addressing quicker than that.

“Good luck to him, it sounds like he’s having a good loan spell at Wednesday. Obviously, to be linked with clubs at the top end of the division when you’re playing down there at the moment is a positive, and he’s clearly a good young player, as much as Ruben Amorim seems intent on destroying whatever kind of confidence his young players have got.

"But it’s a wait and see. I’m happy to be proven wrong, but I can’t particularly see it at the moment.”

Millwall doesn’t appear an appealing move for Harry Amass amid Sheffield Wednesday exploits

While Harry Amass is yet another emerging young star on the second-tier stage, he needs regular playing time for the remainder of the season to develop even further, and you feel like it could be hindered if he made a move to the Den.

And it’s simply because of their plethora of options at left-back. As Millwall fan pundit Lucas mentioned, the Lions already have Zak Sturge and Joe Bryan as natural options, while Alfie Doughty can occupy that role too and be an attacking force at this level.

The Lions may well be considering a departure for Bryan if Amass is in their thinking, but even after that, Amass would have to work incredibly hard to nail down a first-team spot, so it appears like he should be looking elsewhere at a team where he is almost guaranteed to be on the teamsheet most weeks.

Because of this, Stoke City could be his next potential destination given Mark Robins’ connection to the Red Devils and the fact the Potters are quite light at full-back.

Aaron Cresswell has proven to be a shrewd signing on a free transfer following his exit from Premier League outfit West Ham United, but Eric Bocat has emerged as a transfer target for Belgian Pro League club Standard Liege, leading to the Staffordshire side requiring further depth at the turn of the year.

While Amass would be able to arrive and make an impact at most Championship clubs, it appears Millwall may not be the right place to go to continue what has been a fantastic start to his career in the second-tier.
