Ipswich Town have been linked with a deal for Femi Azeez

Ipswich Town earned back their status in the Premier League after just one season with a second place finish.

The Tractor Boys clinched a top two position with a 3-0 victory over QPR at Portman Road on the final day.

Kieran McKenna’s side finished one place above Millwall, but 11 adrift of league champions Coventry City.

The Suffolk outfit were relegated from the Premier League 12 months ago with a 19th place result, so will be looking to improve on that position next season.

It could prove to be a busy summer for Ipswich, with the transfer market offering the club a chance to improve the squad for life in the top flight.

McKenna’s team earned just 22 points in the division last year, so they will need improvements in order to surpass that total and potentially survive the drop back to the Championship.

One player that Ipswich have been linked with ahead of the transfer window opening is Millwall forward Femi Azeez.

The Tractor Boys reportedly made an offer for the player in the January market, but were unable to clinch a deal.

However, it has now been claimed by journalist Alex Jones that the newly-promoted side have moved onto other targets, and that a pursuit of the 24-year-old is unlikely this summer.

He believes there is Premier League interest in the winger beyond Ipswich, which will have the Lions on high alert after they lost in the play-offs to Hull City earlier this month.

“There is Premier League interest beyond Ipswich,” said Jones, via the Kings of Anglia podcast on X.

“From what we’ve seen, as far as what we know, from who we’ve spoken to, it’s not a deal that Ipswich are going to look to pursue this summer.

“Now, the caveat is that things can change.

“But he’s not one Ipswich are looking to sign at the moment.

“I think they’re more likely to, from the conversations we’ve had in the past, look at the foreign markets.”

It has been reported that Millwall are seeking between £15 and 20 million for Azeez following his impressive Championship campaign.

He was a key part of Alex Neil’s side finishing third in the table, but they were unable to maintain their promotion hopes after losing 2-0 to the Tigers in the play-off semi-finals.

The 24-year-old contributed 11 goals and seven assists from 35 appearances in the regular campaign, earning a lot of plaudits for his performances.

However, the one point gap to Ipswich at the end of the season proved enough for McKenna’s side to seal their place in the Premier League ahead of the London outfit.

Azeez has a contract with the Tractor Boys until June 2028, and they will be keen to keep him in the squad for next season in order to push for promotion again in 2027.

Millwall will be pleased with Ipswich’s transfer stance

Ipswich may find better value in the foreign markets, so it’s not too surprising that they’ve moved on from their interest in Azeez now that they’ve earned promotion.

Millwall will be delighted that the Tractor Boys are no longer in the race to sign him, as they now face a summer of fending off Premier League interest.

Azeez impressed in the Championship, and he could be ready to make that step up to the top flight, but it remains unclear whether anyone will step up and pay the £15 to 20 million to sign him.

Ipswich face a tough summer ahead and they need signings that are guaranteed to be ready for the top flight, so it’s understandable they don’t want to take the risk on Azeez at this time.
