Derby County have confirmed that Leigh Bromby has joined the club as Talent Acquisition Lead.
Derby County are continuing to make progress under John Eustace, and they will believe that promotion to the Premier League is a possibility that season.
Even if they do fall short, it’s clear the Rams are heading in the right direction, which will be very welcome considering the issues they had just a number of years ago that left them on the brink.
As well as Eustace’s managerial ability, Derby have been shrewd in the transfer market in recent windows, with Jacob Widell Zetterstrom and Patrick Agyemang just two of the players who have made a massive impact at Pride Park and have increased in value.

Derby County confirm Leigh Bromby as Talent Acquisition Lead
For Derby to continue to kick-on, they will need to find more gems in the market, and the club have confirmed a big decision in their recruitment setup, as they announced that Leigh Bromby had joined on a permanent basis as Talent Acquisition Lead.
The former Leeds United defender had been working at the club, so he has obviously impressed those involved, with the club statement outlining the role he played in bringing Agyemang to Derby.
However, it’s fair to say that Bromby has divided opinion in the past, as he had previously worked at Huddersfield, where he had a mixed record. Playing a key role in recruitment, Bromby came in for plenty of criticism from supporters during what was a difficult period for the Terriers, who dismissed him in June 2023.
But, when asked by FLW about Bromby returning to the game at a higher level, Huddersfield fan pundit Graeme Rayner explained that his record looks a lot better in hindsight, as he was intrigued to see how Bromby fares at Derby.
“It’s an interesting one. He was director of football, or whatever title they give, and he was here for three seasons. A lot of players arrived in that period, and a lot didn’t work out. But, he did bring in our most successful transfers in recent years, like Brodie Spencer and Sorba Thomas, who both moved on for decent fees.
“He brought in Etienne Camara who went to Udinese, Michal Helik who we got some funds for after he moved on to better things. Then, he brought in players who are still here, Lee Nicholls and David Kasumu, Matty Pearson and Tom Lees were good for a few years for us. So, it’s an interesting one.
“He signed some who were absolute turkeys, but there were some good loan signings as well, like Levi Colwill, who most Town fans saw early on how talented he was. And, he brought in Jack Rudoni who we sold.
“So, compared to the people that followed him, his recruitment record wasn’t that bad. I know that he is someone fans have a negative feeling for, because when the transfers were wrong, they were really wrong. But, when he got it right, they have been the most successful transfers in the past four or five years, either in longevity at the club or recouping decent fees.
“It’s a difficult one. What followed him in Mark Cartwright, who was extremely unpopular, makes him look a better option, so it will be interesting to see how he does at Derby.”

Even though Bromby has been working at Derby, there will be more scrutiny on him now he has landed a permanent position, and, ultimately, he will be judged over the next few years.
But, the fact that Derby have secured him on a permanent deal shows they have been pleased with his work, which is understandable when you look at their transfer business in recent windows, and it seems he has a strong relationship with Eustace.
The importance of recruitment can’t be understated, and given Derby are coming up against clubs with parachute payments and with larger resources, they must get a lot right.
A huge summer awaits, and Derby fans will hope Bromby and the recruitment team can sign a few more like Agyemang, especially if the striker is sold for what would be a huge profit this summer to increase the budget.
