Friday’s reports claim that Luka Modric wants to continue playing for another season, but that he could then move into a coaching role on Massimiliano Allegri’s staff from the beginning of the 2027-28 season onwards.

Modric wants to play for another year before starting coaching career

According to reports from the Corriere dello Sport, Modric wishes to continue playing for another season after the upcoming 2026 World Cup, whether that be with Milan or elsewhere. Much depends on the final game of the season and the future plans of the head coach.

Friday’s report claims there are two conditions for Modric to stay in Milan for another season. First is securing Champions League football for 2026-27: The Rossoneri are third and have a two-point buffer between themselves and fifth place heading into the final round of fixtures on Sunday.

Secondly, Modric reportedly wishes to continue playing under Allegri, who has been linked with moves to both Napoli and the Italy national team set-up in recent weeks, but the Corriere dello Sport indicates that he is increasingly likely to stay put.

Modric is said to have enjoyed his time in Milan working under Allegri thus far and Friday’s report claims there is a great deal of mutual admiration and respect between the coach and the former Ballon d’Or winner.

That is why, when Modric begins his coaching career, potentially in 2027-28, he wishes to do so working under Allegri, again, whether that be with Milan or elsewhere.

In the meantime, the 40-year-old is pushing for a place in Milan’s starting line-up for their final Serie A match of the season against Cagliari on Sunday after making a rapid recovery from a fractured cheekbone injury sustained while playing against Juventus a few weeks ago.

The Rossoneri have reportedly gone in for a mini-training camp on Friday, and the team will stay together until the Cagliari match on Sunday.
