Liverpool return to European action on Wednesday night with PSV Eindhoven arriving at Anfield for a fixture that carries significance both in the league phase and in the club’s broader continental history. With three wins from their opening four Champions League matches, the Reds approach this contest with momentum, clarity of purpose, and a chance to reach several landmarks — none more eye-catching than Mo Salah closing in on 90 European appearances.
The Egyptian forward continues to redefine expectations, and his looming landmark adds further weight to an already-influential role this season. Should he feature against PSV, Salah would become only the fourth player in Liverpool’s history to reach 90 European appearances, joining a select group featuring Jamie Carragher (150), Steven Gerrard (130) and Sami Hyypiä (94). It marks another chapter in a storied European career that has delivered decisive goals, defining moments and sustained excellence.
Liverpool’s previous home match against Dutch opposition featured Salah on the scoresheet, during the 2-1 victory over Ajax in 2022. His consistency in Europe remains a cornerstone of Liverpool’s modern identity, and his presence again feels pivotal as the club aim to secure top spot in the league phase.

Beyond the individual achievement, Liverpool stand on the brink of collective milestones too. One more goal will bring up 500 as the home side across all European competitions. They are also a single strike from reaching 500 goals in the European Cup/Champions League itself — an illustration of the club’s long-standing continental pedigree.
The meeting with PSV is the eighth between the clubs, all of which have taken place in this competition. Liverpool have won five of the previous seven encounters, with the only exceptions being the 2006 draw and PSV’s 3-2 win last season, both played in Eindhoven.
Arne Slot will take charge of a match against PSV for the 11th time in his career — the opponent he has faced more than any other — adding a personal subplot to an already significant fixture.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk have featured in every minute of the Champions League campaign so far, offering both structure and reliability in a side that has shown improvements in balance and tempo under the current coaching set-up.
Ibrahima Konaté, meanwhile, is on the verge of reaching 150 Liverpool appearances, underlining his continued rise as a central figure in defence.
Cody Gakpo’s involvement brings another layer of narrative: he made 159 appearances for PSV, scoring 55 goals before moving to Merseyside. Encounters with former clubs often carry emotional weight, and he is expected to be central to Liverpool’s attacking approach.
PSV travel to Anfield in strong domestic form, leading the Eredivisie after 13 matches with 34 points. Their output across all competitions this season — 52 goals in 18 matches — highlights the firepower they bring, with 21 of those strikes coming in their last six outings. They are unbeaten in 11 matches since their defeat to Union SG in September.
Their European form has been mixed, but they remain difficult opponents: defeating Napoli 6-2 stands out as a notable marker of their offensive quality. With seven wins and seven draws from their last 17 Champions League league-phase matches, PSV have developed a level of resilience that ensures Liverpool cannot afford complacency.
Liverpool, however, boast one of the most formidable home records in the competition. They have won their last 13 Champions League league-phase matches at Anfield, and none of their last 30 games in this stage of UEFA competition have ended in a draw.
With landmarks, momentum and history converging on a single night, Wednesday’s contest promises more than just another step towards qualification. It could deliver another milestone for Mo Salah, a fresh page in Liverpool’s European story, and a meeting between two sides intent on playing bold, attacking football at one of the sport’s most iconic venues.
