Olympique de Marseille’s American owner Frank McCourt made a rare appearance at the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday evening as Les Olympiens got back to winning ways over Toulouse FC (3-2) to get their hopes of qualifying to the UEFA Champions League back on track. It was a rare victory in the presence of McCourt – who is often associated with OM’s inconsistent record when in attendance at the Vélodrome. According to a report from La Provence, the American went down to the players’ dressing room at the final whistle, in order to congratulate the squad – described as a “moment of sacred unity” by sources at the club. Whilst not defensively convincing, OM got the job done against TFC to set up a high-stakes trip to Monaco this weekend. “It shows we’re all in this together,” said a source at Marseille.

McCourt ‘concerned’ by financial fallout of TV rights deal

On Monday, Mccourt reportedly held an in-depth 90-minute meeting with club president Pablo Longoria during which the pair assessed the current financial situation of French football. Central to the discussions was the on-going conflict between the Ligue de Football Professionnel and broadcaster DAZN. McCourt was reportedly “deeply concerned” about the potential financial fallout of the breakdown in relationship between Ligue 1 and its broadcaster. The American stood by his president earlier this season, following Longoria’s outburst at Auxerre which saw him served a 15-match suspension from the league authorities. Last season, McCourt played a big role in keeping the Spaniard at the club after he was thinking about stepping down from the club after pressure from supporter groups. GFFN | George Boxall
