AS Monaco are incurring a fine of €25,000 for every match that Sébastien Pocognoli (38) coaches, because he lacks the requisite qualification, L’Équipe has reported.
Despite coaching Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League title last season, Pocognoli is still studying for his professional coaching qualification, which he is due to acquire this coming summer. According to French football regulations, a qualified coach must be named as head coach for any domestic league or cup match, failing which a €25,000 fine is incurred.
Aware of the situation when Pocognoli was appointed to replace Adi Hütter last October, Monaco considered Damien Perrinelle – an assistant coach under both Hutter and Pocognoli – as his proxy on the team sheet. Perrinelle even secured a pay rise in consideration for this and was named on the team sheet for a match against Toulouse FC in October.
However, Perrinelle also lacks the correct qualification so the fine was incurred in any case. Since then, the role of head coach has been left blank on official team sheets.
Pocognoli has to date presided over 17 domestic matches (14 in Ligue 1; three in the Coupe de France), lifting the fine to €425,000. Should he remain in the head coach role until the end of the season, the fine will rise to €750,000.
