Nice-Matin reports that Monaco have decided against triggering their option to sign Simon Adingra permanently after his loan from Sunderland. The clause was estimated at between €5m and €10m, roughly £4.3m to £8.5m, though some reports at the time put it nearer £17m.
Adingra joined in January and made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three and providing two assists. The Ivory Coast winger produced moments of quality but his form was inconsistent.
Used mainly as a wing-back, he was asked to adapt to a different role. He offered threat going forward, but there were concerns over his defensive work and his displays fluctuated.
Monaco’s stance means Adingra is set to return to Sunderland this summer. Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris will now decide whether he is reintegrated, moved on again or considered as part of a wider Premier League group.
His loan did not affect his international standing. He was named in Ivory Coast’s World Cup squad and came on in the 74th minute of their 2-1 defeat to Germany, though he missed last season’s AFCON.
Sunderland will weigh up his position as they shape the squad for the new campaign. For Ghisolfi, it is another transfer call in a window full of moving parts.
