It’s no secret that Unai Emery’s side have been struggling in the transfer market and the sad reality for Harvey Elliott is that he’s joined a club in crisis.

Their big-money signings under Monchi have failed to hit their marks - including the likes of Mousa Diaby, Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Donyell Malen.

Villa will need to sell a star

Villa also added Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio on loan during the second half of last season - meaning their wage bill swelled at a time when Champions League football was lost.

In turn it leaves plenty of the top stars still at the club uncertain of their futures. Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins were heavily linked with the exit in summer but neither ended up moving on.

They have managed to bank good money for Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey and Jhon Duran but owing to PSR regulations they are likely to be facing another monumental sale next summer.

“It seems inevitable that Villa will have to sell a major asset next summer and this is the time to prepare,” a report in the Daily Mail reads.

Liverpool like Morgan Rogers

With Martinez and Watkins getting on in age, it looks like Morgan Rogers could be the next big sale.

The 23-year-old joined Villa from Middlesbrough back in February 2024 and is under contract until 2030. England international Rogers has been touted as a Liverpool signing throughout the past few months.

Capable of playing in an array of attacking positions, Rogers is now doing it at the very highest levels - scoring four goals and adding three assists in last season’s Champions League.
