Walid Regragui (50), coach of the Morocco national team, is the latest person to have been linked with the vacant post at Olympique de Marseille, according to RMC.
After Roberto de Zerbi’s departure, announced by the club overnight, several names have been put forward as candidates, including former Stade Rennais coach Habib Beye, ex-FC Nantes Sérgio Conceição – current head coach of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad – Nigeria’s current head coach Éric Chelle.
Regragui notably led Morocco to the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – the first African nation to reach that stage of the tournament – before the Atlas Lions were defeated by France. More recently, he led the team to the final of this year’s African Cup of Nations on home soil. Following Morocco’s defeat after extra time to Senegal, Regragui reportedly offered his resignation to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, who declined his offer.
According to RMC, Regragui has the favour of some Marseille employees, but the upcoming World Cup, allied to the fact that he remains under contract with the Moroccan Federation, are potential stumbling blocks. No concrete discussions have yet taken place.
