David Moyes believes a ‘mental’ Merseyside Derby was a ‘fitting’ last derby at Goodison Park as Everton equalised in stoppage time against Liverpool.

James Tarkowski thumped in a 98th-minute equaliser to cap an enthralling game between the Merseyside rivals. Everton led inside 11 minutes when Beto fired the hosts ahead. The forward ghosted in behind his marker to collect Jarrad Branthwaite’s free-kick and finish past Alisson.

However, Liverpool levelled just five minutes later. Alexis Mac Allister met Mohamed Salah’s cross unmarked to glance into the far corner. Everton had the better chances after the break with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jack Harrison wasteful, but Salah struck for the visitors against the run of play. Curtis Jones’ shot fell to the Egyptian who fired in his 22nd goal of the Premier League season.

Everton refused to give up and got their reward with just seconds on the clock. A loose ball fell to Tarkowski who thundered in a stunning volley on his 100th league appearance for the club. Tensions boiled over at full-time with Jones, Doucoure and Liverpool manager Arne Slot all sent off as the two sets of players clashed.

“Mental probably sums it up. A brilliant finish for us, to finish the last Goodison Merseyside derby and score in the last minute is in a way fitting,” Moyes said speaking to TNT Sports.

“We would have liked to have won the game but at 2-1 down I was just thinking that we probably weren’t going to get back in, it just looked like Liverpool would keep us out.

“We worked hard, kept at it, probably had more attempts in the second half than the first. Tarky had the quality which was the one that really mattered.”

Moyes has made a positive start to his second spell at Everton and believes the dramatic draw is ‘right up there’ with any game from his two stints in charge.

“It was right up there and it was great at the end. I think the night was maybe made for something to happen. It wasn’t the greatest, it wasn’t the cleanest game of football you’ve ever watched but it was a bit of a throwback, a bit scrappy for both sides. We had to find a way of making the gap not so big tonight and did a good job of it.”
