Thomas Müller is expected to have a great future at FC Bayern, but Oliver Kahn warns against taking on a leadership role too quickly

What happens after Thomas Müller’s active career is not just a question for FC Bayern fans. The 36-year-old is currently still under contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, but the next step is already being considered in the background

Those responsible at FC Bayern have already signaled to Müller that he could take on an important role at the club in the future, with a direct move into a management position certainly appearing to be on the cards

However, Oliver Kahn takes a critical view of this development. In an interview with the SZ, the former Munich board boss expressed clear concerns: „Even if you are a world champion and have won everything, you need other skills to be in charge of a club. These are more complex than ever today. I don’t think you can do it without experience and further training.“

For Kahn, it is clear that the demands on officials in modern soccer have increased enormously: „Today, a club has to develop its own programs and ideas: What is the right way for someone in such a role? How is he involved in which area and when? To believe that at some point you bring in a former player because of his past: that falls short.“

Despite his critical stance, Kahn makes it clear that he thinks highly of Müller: „I’ve known Thomas for a while. There’s nothing negative you can say about him. A very open guy, always willing to talk, with clear views.“

Müller is planning a deliberate career path

Müller himself also seems to be aware of the challenge. The attacking player plans to continue his training in a targeted manner after the end of his career and not rush into a new role

At the same time, Bayern already have concrete ideas for his development. Uli Hoeneß recently explained: „I have already offered Thomas that we will train him properly.“

The plan is for Müller to gain insights into top international clubs and large companies after his active career in order to optimally prepare himself for a potential management role

It remains to be seen when Müller will take this step, but one thing is clear: FC Bayern believes he can hold an important position in the long term.
