Michael Olise is playing an outstanding season at FC Bayern and is getting ever closer to Thomas Müller. After the 3:2 win against Freiburg, a historic Bundesliga record is now coming into focus.

The Frenchman is currently just three assists away from equalling Müller’s record from the 2019/20 season, when the veteran provided 21 assists – the highest figure in a Bundesliga season to date.

A glance at the list shows just how extraordinary this figure is. Müller himself appears in the top rankings several times, including with 19 assists in 2020/21 and 18 in 2021/22. Top international players such as Kevin De Bruyne (19 in 2014/15) also feature in the list – but the 21 assists have yet to be equalled.

Michael Olise has now joined this ranks. With 18 assists in the 2025/26 season, he is already one of the best assist providers in the league’s history. He already delivered strong figures last year with 15 assists, and now he is adding to them once again.

The 24-year-old once again showed his class after coming on as a substitute in the 3:2 win against Freiburg and played a key role in the attacking play. His development has not gone unnoticed internally either. Coach Vincent Kompany highlighted the way his winger works in the run-up to the game: „What makes Michael Olise so special? His mentality. He is a boy who works in great detail“.

The Bayern coach even drew a high-profile comparison: „In terms of mentality, I compared him to Kevin De Bruyne and I will always do that.“ He sees parallels, especially in training: „What makes Michael so annoying in training, I have the feeling that I see a young Kevin who is always demanding and analyzes everything down to the last detail.“

In addition to his attitude, Kompany also praised the attacking player’s footballing qualities: „What Michael does, how he shoots, how he dribbles, right and left foot – I’ve seen that in a player before“.
