Municipal hosts Sporting San Miguelito in Central American Cup

MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continues with CSD Municipal hosting Sporting San Miguelito in Group B on Thursday at Estadio El Trébol in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Municipal and Sporting San Miguelito will face each other for the first time in their history. For Municipal, it will also be its first encounter against a Panamanian club in the CCAC. For San Miguelito, this will be a first-ever match against a Guatemalan side in the competition.
Municipal will be in search of its first win after earning a point in its first Group B encounter. The Guatemalans drew 1-1 on the road against Diriangén FC in dramatic fashion, with a late equalizer through an Eddie Hernández penalty in the 90+7’.
Eddie Hernández scored his first goal in the CCAC—the Honduran striker converted the latest penalty ever in the tournament’s history (90+7).
Municipal’s Kenderson Navarro became the Guatemalan goalkeeper with the most saves (7) in a debut match in Central American Cup history.
San Miguelito will be kicking off its second participation after competing in the inaugural edition of the CCAC. The Panamanian side will eye a knockout stage berth after concluding its only previous appearance in in the Group Stage in 2023, placing third with four points in Group D with a 2-0-2 record.

CSD Municipal and Sporting San Miguelito will face each other for the first time in the Central American Cup. For Municipal, it will also be their first encounter against a Panamanian club in the CCAC, while for San Miguelito, this will be their first-ever match against a Guatemalan side in the history of the Concacaf Central American Cup.
Throughout its history, CSD Municipal has faced Panamanian clubs nine times in official tournaments, with a record of (W-6 D-2 L-1). These encounters include four in the Concacaf Champions Cup (W-2 D-1 L-1) and five in the Copa Interclubes (W-4 D-1). Municipal’s only loss to a Panamanian club came in a 2-1 defeat to Tauro FC on Matchday 4 of Group D in the 2008/2009 Concacaf Champions Cup, played at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City (PAN) on September 25, 2008. The goals for Sporting San Miguelito were scored by Brunet Hay Pino (2), and Guillermo “El Pando” Ramírez scored for Municipal.
Sporting San Miguelito has faced Guatemalan clubs twice in their history (W-1 D-1), both matches against Deportivo Malacateco, winning the series 4-1 on aggregate. The first leg took place at Estadio Pensativo in Antigua (GUA) on July 27, 2022, ending in a 1-1 draw. Kevyn Aguilar scored for the home side, while Édson Sammis scored for the visitors. The return leg on August 3, 2022, at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City (PAN), saw Sporting San Miguelito win 3-0, with goals from Adolfo Machado, Kevin Galván, and Dwann Oliveira.
