Bild reports that Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has told Oliver Baumann that Manuel Neuer will be Germany’s starting goalkeeper at the World Cup.
Sky Germany reported at the weekend that Neuer is set to come out of international retirement for the tournament.
Baumann, the Hoffenheim goalkeeper, had been Germany’s first-choice throughout the qualifying campaign and looked set to begin the finals until this late change. Despite disappointment, he has reportedly made clear to Nagelsmann that he will remain available even if Neuer returns as No. 1.
Neuer is nursing a minor injury picked up in Bayern Munich’s 5-1 win over 1. FC Köln at the weekend, leaving him a doubt for Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart. His participation at the World Cup is not expected to be at risk.
The 40-year-old Bayern goalkeeper has made 124 appearances for Germany and initially retired from international football after Euro 2024.
