Nambatingue Toko, PSG’s first European scorer, dies aged 73 | OneFootball

Nambatingue Toko, PSG’s first European scorer and a two-time Coupe de France winner, has died aged 73.

L'Équipe reports that the forward, full name Nambatingue Tokomon Dieudonné, was the first Chadian to turn professional in France and a French champion with Strasbourg in 1979.

He made PSG history on 28 September 1982 in the Cup Winners’ Cup round of 32. Paris beat Lokomotiv Sofia 5-1 after a 0-1 first leg, and he struck twice, the opener and then the 3-1 with a right-foot volley.

With PSG under president Francis Borelli, he lifted the Coupe de France in 1982 against Saint-Etienne and in 1983 against Nantes, scoring in both finals. He stayed five years, playing 171 matches and scoring 43 goals.

Discovered at Yal-Tchad in N’Djamena, he came to France for an unsuccessful trial at Grenoble, then joined US Albi in 1973. Nice signed him and he played the 1978 final, a 0-1 defeat by Nancy.

Short spells at Bordeaux and Strasbourg preceded a season at Valenciennes, where he rated a left-foot strike at Monaco in 1979-80, past Jean-Luc Ettori, as his finest.

He finished at RC Paris in 1985-86, then worked in PSG’s recruitment until 1999. A father of four, he freelanced, spent time in Tunisia and Italy, and retired in 2013 in Vallauris. He later described living modestly after taxes and liquidations, and he remains a Parc des Princes favourite of the Safet Susic and Mustapha Dahleb era.
